Our Strangely Normal Home

Next to our front door a sign reads:

‘Welcome to our humble home, full of standard everyday goings on. Full of mundane chores and the buzz of regular life, which is really a secret code for here lives the most magical of creatures and superheroes living the greatest love story of all time.’

I don’t know who wrote this saying, but it’s the mantra for our home and the inspiration for the artwork in this book. Before this book was even conceived, I began building a large wall-mounted sculpture titled Floorplan, comprising twelve of my grandmother GWENDOLINE’S vintage suitcases. Each case houses a mini diorama depicting each room of our home. It is a three-dimensional biography featuring my two children - HEIDI and HARRY and our adopted family - a Border Collie named TEMBO, our two chooks, WONDER WOMAN and POET, and our rabbit, TEXTA. Transforming Floorplan into a book seemed a logical progression to sustain and embellish the myths that have become legends in our home.
