What To Do With The Detritus?

Sometimes the detritus I collect immediately manifests itself into a piece of work and other times it will sit on my work bench, for ever and a day.  One fall, before the salvage yards in Calgary were blanketed in snow, I was stumbling over a mountain of scrap metal and discovered an interesting wire mesh screen. When I dismantled the screen I found, concealed inside, thousands of large granules of charcoal. I rarely discard anything so these granules found a home in a container on my workbench. This curious collection became an interesting conversation piece with many on-lookers querying me regarding its origins. They would dip, drag and sprinkle their fingers through the tiny granules, seduced by their colour and texture. ‘What To Do With The Detritus’ is a narrative which represented my thoughts out loud as I solved the problem of finding a home for all my found treasures. I was determined, before I departed Calgary, to find an appropriate home for these small grains of curiosity."
