‘Bathing with Bilby’. Porcelain Pendulum Light Shade

During a year long Residency at Alberta college of Art and design, I had the privilege of working along side many Canadian clay artists who inspire their community through their stunning functional ceramics. For me it reinforced the value of the hand made object in the home, and how much a hand crafted object can enrich our lives. Utilitarian objects are powerful memory vessels, when I sip from a cup made by a maker living in a far off land I am immediately transported to a very special place and moment in time. From the perspective of a maker I continue to love that imagined place in my head that making usable objects sweeps me away to. While I am in the studio making a cup something magical happens… I picture someone in their home enjoying drinking from it as part of their daily ritual and it makes me smile.
